ABOUT

A new name, but the stories are the same

Everybody on the internet has, at some time or another, found themselves in an awkward situation. Haven’t they? I mean, who doesn’t fall in love, then fall down stairs? Who hasn’t meet a boy on a music matchmaking site, only to find out months later you were matched by a playlist that wasn’t yours?

I started my blog two years ago as a joke. Working in television, the writing I was doing was for the Dave TV channel, where I reviewed films online as an irreverent man for the self-proclaimed home of witty banter. Always Dave, always a man. But I’m me! So I created a small space online - a ‘secret diary’ - where I could write, as myself, a few times a week. Nobody knew about it.

I wrote stories about my sister becoming an unwitting poster girl for the Tories. I shared pictures of me being abducted by 100 Where’s Wallies. I told tales of flirting on train journeys thwarted by Leona Lewis on shuffle. I described my inner calamity with boys. And slowly it grew, and it grew, and grew…

By 2011, 10,000+ people a month were reading my stories, with 4,000 followers on Twitter regularly pointing out how idiotic my life was (is). Brands started to ask me to review things - like festivals, and snacks, and films - because they know I’ll create some chaotic content out of it, and tell people upfront I think they invited me as a joke. I still talk about films, because I run social media for films during the day, and watch them in bed at night.

It’s time to put down the mantle of ‘Secret Diary’. There’s nothing secret about my blog, anymore; but there is something hugely awkward about the situations I find myself in, and the stories I write about them. I hope you like them, and feel you can laugh at me or even hold me up as a shining example of what not to do. (Particularly with boys.) I’ll keep telling you my awkward situations, because this site is now awkwardsituationsforgirls.com.

Thanks for reading.
Katie
